Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern, located near the Hagia Sophia, is an ancient underground water reservoir built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. This vast subterranean structure, supported by 336 marble columns, was used to supply water to the Great Palace of Constantinople. The cistern is famous for its atmospheric lighting and the two Medusa head sculptures used as column bases. Visitors can walk along the raised platforms and marvel at the engineering prowess of the Byzantines. The eerie yet beautiful ambiance of the cistern makes it a unique and memorable attraction in Istanbul.
